Manchester United Eye Conor Gallagher Move as Midfield Overhaul Looms
Manchester United’s midfield rebuild could take an intriguing turn, with reports suggesting Ruben Amorim is weighing up a surprise swoop for Atletico Madrid’s Conor Gallagher. The England international, who made the controversial switch from Chelsea last summer, may already be eyeing a Premier League return.
Why United Need Midfield Reinforcement
The writing appears on the wall for veteran Casemiro, whose contract expires in June. At 34, the Brazilian’s time at Old Trafford seems destined to end despite recent goalscoring form. Meanwhile, Manuel Ugarte hasn’t quite justified his hefty price tag, Mason Mount remains plagued by fitness woes, and even academy gem Kobbie Mainoo has been frozen out—managing just 138 Premier League minutes under Amorim.

According to transfer insider Ekrem Konur, United are actively exploring the Gallagher option as Amorim searches for his ideal midfield profile. The 25-year-old spent over a decade at Chelsea before his £33m move to the Spanish capital, but regular football under Diego Simeone has proved elusive.
Is Gallagher the Right Fit?
There’s obvious appeal here. Gallagher boasts extensive Premier League experience from successful stints at Crystal Palace and Chelsea, offering proven top-flight quality without the typical January transfer premium. Atletico would likely accept around £35m to recoup their investment.
However, questions remain. United have been linked with younger, in-form talents like Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton, and Elliot Anderson—all of whom are enjoying superior campaigns. Gallagher represents a safer, more attainable option, but is “safe” what United need right now?
With Amorim’s revolution still in its infancy, perhaps patience is the wisest strategy. Allowing the current squad to develop chemistry before splashing cash in summer might prove more beneficial than a panic buy in January’s notoriously difficult market.
The Gallagher links suggest United are serious about midfield reinforcement, but whether he’s the transformative signing Old Trafford craves remains open to debate.
