West Ham to launch £30m move for Southampton midfielder Mateus Fernandes

West Ham United are reportedly ready to launch a bid for Mateus Fernandes, with The Guardian claiming the 21-year-old Portuguese talent is high on their summer transfer shortlist.

The Hammers are in the market for midfield reinforcements after a mixed 2024/25 campaign, and Fernandes — one of Southampton’s few bright spots last season — has emerged as a prime target. The Saints are said to be demanding around £30 million for their Olhão-born star.

Fernandes’ Rise at Southampton

Fernandes joined Southampton from Sporting CP last summer and quickly established himself as a key player, contributing three goals and six assists in 43 appearances. While the Saints endured relegation from the Premier League, his individual performances caught the attention of several top-flight clubs.

Why West Ham Want Him

With Carlos Soler returning to PSG after an underwhelming loan spell and Guido Rodriguez struggling to adapt, West Ham are reshaping their midfield. The futures of James Ward-Prowse, Tomas Soucek, and Edson Alvarez also remain uncertain, making Fernandes a potential long-term solution.

Manager Julen Lopetegui is keen on adding youthful energy and creativity in the middle of the park, and Fernandes’ ability to link play, press aggressively, and contribute in the final third makes him an ideal fit.

Competition and Alternatives

While West Ham prepare their opening offer, it’s unclear whether they will meet Southampton’s £30m asking price. Fernandes isn’t their only target, with Jacob Ramsey and Ngal’ayel Mukau also on the club’s radar.

If negotiations progress, Fernandes could become one of West Ham’s marquee summer signings — injecting much-needed flair and dynamism into their midfield for the 2025/26 season.
