Chelsea to pip Man City to 24-year-old defender

Chelsea are reportedly keen to edge out Manchester City in the race to sign the Brighton & Hove Albion defender Marc Cucurella.

City are believed to have identified the 24-year-old as a leading transfer target, but a move has stalled, with the Seagulls said to want £50m for the left-back.

The Premier League champions remain interested in the Spaniard but will not meet Brighton’s current asking price, and according to the Daily Mail, the Blues are now exploring the possibility of a deal.

The report adds that Chelsea want a new left-back this summer, with Marcos Alonso likely to make a move to Barcelona very soon.

Brighton are in a strong position when it comes to Cucurella’s future, as the full-back has four years left to run on his current deal.

Thomas Tuchel’s side have been relatively quiet during the current transfer window, bringing in only two players with the likes of Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly.

Chelsea to begin their 2022-23 Premier League season away to Everton on August 6.
