Liverpool eye Chelsea defender Levi Colwill

Liverpool have reportedly outlined their intentions to move for Chelsea centre-back Levi Colwill as a potential future transfer target.

Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp has a wealth of options to choose from when all his centre-backs are fit. Unfortunately, fitness issues have plagued the club’s defence this season, with Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez, and Joel Matip all spending time on the sidelines. This has resulted in Nat Phillips remaining at Anfield instead of being loaned out.

However, the future of at least half of these players are uncertain, with Gomez and Matip failing to impress this season. Phillips is also likely to depart on a permanent or temporary basis during the summer. Klopp now needs to consider alternatives and bring in new competition for Van Dijk and Konate.

Football Insider reports that Liverpool officials are impressed by the progress made by Colwill during the 2022-23 season. The 20-year-old had a successful loan spell at Huddersfield Town in the Championship last season.

Despite being hampered by injury, Colwill has made a positive impression at the Amex Stadium, making nine starts and two substitute appearances. However, he has been out of action since January, with his last appearance coming against Liverpool in a game that saw the Seagulls win 3-0.

Brighton head coach Roberto De Zerbi has emphasised the importance of Colwill, who is currently set to return to parent club Chelsea at the end of the season. Colwill’s contract with the Blues runs until 2025, but there is speculation that the West Londoners may consider selling him to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.
